How the IRLNEP Engages Partners To Restore the Lagoon
Restoring the Indian River Lagoon’s (IRL) health is going to take every level of government, every agency, every county, every city and every citizen. Because stormwater and wastewater connect everyone to the lagoon, we’re each the reason for our water quality woes.
And we all must be part of the solution.
The IRLNEP works closely with federal and Florida state agency partners, county and city governments, citizens and businesses to improve the lagoon. Together, here’s what we work to do:
- Restore water and habitat quality in the IRL.
- Engage and educate the public about lagoon health.
- Help everyone find ways to become good stewards of the lagoon.

Partner Projects Improving the Lagoon
Beyond the IRLNEP’s own work, county and city governments, state agencies and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are improving IRL conditions. Each carries responsibilities that affect the lagoon’s health:
- Stormwater remediation
- Wastewater treatment and discharge
- Infrastructure repair
- Septic-to-sewer conversions
- Erosion prevention and resiliency planning
- Shoreline and filter feeder restoration
- Planning for future growth
Annually, the IRLNEP asks federal, state and local partners what IRL-focused projects they’ve implemented, outside any joint work with the IRLNEP.
As of fiscal year 2026, partners reported 297 completed or in-progress projects. That brought the total reported projects from 2020 through 2026 to 1,707.
