How To Purchase the IRL License Plate
If you don’t already have an IRL license plate and want to know how to purchase one, you’re in the right place!
The process is a little bit different, depending on whether you’re purchasing an IRL license plate for the first time or renewing one. We’ve outlined each process below.
First-Time Buyers
If you’re buying an IRL license plate for the first time, you’ll have to visit your local tag office in person. Though some tag offices accommodate walk-in visits, many require appointments.
Visit the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) website to find a location and schedule an appointment in your county.
During your appointment, the tag office will issue you a new IRL license plate and transfer your registration information to your new plate.
New Car Buyers
However, most dealerships will only purchase the standard Florida license plate. To obtain your IRL license plate, you’ll need to exchange the standard Florida plate at your local tag office.
Cars With Standard Plates or a Different Specialty Tag
Renewals
If you’ve already purchased an IRL license plate and need to renew your registration, the FLHSMV has a convenient online registration process.
Simply go to GoRenew.com and follow the prompts. In addition to registration fees, there will also be a $2.00 convenience fee charged for online service.
You may renew your registration for either 1 or 2 years. Expect to wait 7 to 10 business days before receiving your registration in the mail. Should your registration expire while waiting for the renewal materials, you may use the confirmation email you’ll receive as proof of purchase.
Note. If any stops occur (such as invalid insurance or an expired driver’s license) during the registration renewal process, you’ll need to visit your local tag office in person or call FLHSMV customer service at 850-617-2000 for assistance.
Renew Your License Plate On the MyFlorida for FLHSMV Mobile App
Did you know FLHSMV has a mobile app where you may renew up to five tags at once?
Download the MyFlorida app for free via Mac App Store or Google Play.
You can pay using either a credit card ($4.00 convenience fee) or checking account ($3.75 convenience fee).
To renew via the mobile app, you must provide one of the following for identification purposes:
- License plate number
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Hull identification number (HIN)
Unfortunately, you can’t renew your license plate if an MV office doesn’t verify your insurance as valid. However, if you successfully submit your valid insurance, registration and payment, you’ll receive a digital document that verifies your renewal until it comes in the mail.
